Hello all,

Tammy and I tackled a new path during our run this morning. Typically, we run at the LA Tech track or a jog path at one of the local parks; today we took off from our apartments and ran the road. The path is two miles but has some major hills. Overall, I’m very pleased with our results. We ended up walking a little at the halfway point, right after one of the big hills, and then ran most of the rest. We are going to hit it again tomorrow morning as well.

As I mentioned in my Facebook post, I have been fighting severe shin splints for several weeks now. In the past during our cool down I would start to experience terrible pain about midway down my lower leg and right behind my tibia (the main bone of your lower leg). By the time we would finish our cool down walk and get to the car I could barely walk. I would ice my legs when we got home to ease the pain, but I never could really recover. One of Tammy’s colleagues mentioned shin sleeves as a possible solution so we went to Academy this weekend and I bought a set. Let me tell you, the difference is unbelievable. Today I felt no pain or tightness at all. I am very excited.

Oh, BTW, we are set to “run” our first 5K this weekend.


OK, we are registered for the River Cities. Whoohoo. And we are running 3 5Ks in the next 4 weeks. Ugh.

Tonight we finish Couch to 5K Week 5. Hope y’all are doing well with the training.

You know, I got your text about your post just as I was finishing my upper body workout. Tammy and I are sorry we haven’t posted in a while, but a little excursion to Puerto Rico got in the way. 😉

Tonight we get back on Couch to 5K. We started week 4 before going to Puerto Rico but we both agree that we need to start the week over after our hiatus. I do remember that those long 5 minute runs were hurting me so I’m sure tonight will not be fun.

In addition to the running, I have added P90X to my routine. I’ve had the program for a couple of years and I’ve started it several times (the furtherest I’ve completed is stage 2) but travel always seems to have gotten in the way of completing it. I really enjoy the program and have always found it challenging. Yesterday I did an hour of cardio (Cardio X for those in the know) and today was shoulders and arms. Tomorrow is Yoga X. An hour and a half of brutal but very satisfying yoga.

Sorry we have been absent, but rest assured, we are still working and looking forward to August.

The other day Tonya had some comments about nutrition. I mentioned in my last post that my eating habits are not the greatest but I have been taking great pains to watch my nutrition and even track what I am eating. To do this effectively I use a tool called Daily Burn (http://dailyburn.com/). The site has tools that allow you to set intake goals and then track them by inputting what you eat. It sounds like a pain but it’s really not. Since I eat a lot of the same foods daily, I have those in my favorites and I just add them as I eat them. I can quickly see how many calories I’ve eaten during a day and how they are broken out (proteins, carbs, fats, etc).

The site has a free membership that allows you to do almost everything except add foods to their database. They also have an iPhone app.

Anyway, I thought y’all might be interested in it.

Hey girls,

Sorry for not posting in a while. The trip to Chicago took a lot out of me. Since I last posted, Tammy and I finished the second week of Couch to 5K. Last night we started week 3. Let me tell you, it was a little rough. Tammy made the runs very well. I did great until the second long run and I got a cramp in my left shin. Had to walk for a few seconds and then finished the run, but that was about all I could do.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to running again tomorrow night. Tonight, we will do some strength training.

So Tammy and I finished Week 1 of Couch to 5K last night. Because of the storm that moved through last night we ran on the street instead of the LA Tech track. I could really tell the difference in my knees and chins. But, we persevered and completed the run. It felt great.

I think I am going to do some light yoga today to try and stretch and let my muscles recover. As part of the strength building program we are doing, we did a lot of squats the other day and my glutes are killing me. Time to recover.

So last night I completed Week 1, Day 2 of Couch to 5K. During my runs I was keeping up a 8 min/mile pace and I felt really good. This morning I continued with my strength training by doing some upper body work: bench press, lat pulls, shoulder press and rows. Man, my arms hurt.

Tonight, Tammy and I are doing the second circuit of the 15 Minute to Warrior Fit routine. I should be suitably sore tomorrow.
